Understanding PAYE in the UK

If you’re employed in the UK, you’ve probably heard the term PAYE - but many people aren’t exactly sure what it means or how it works.

PAYE affects how tax and National Insurance are collected from your wages and plays a big role in how much you take home each month. In this guide, we explain what PAYE is, who it applies to, and how it works in simple terms.

What Does PAYE Mean?

PAYE stands for Pay As You Earn.

It’s the system HMRC uses to collect:

  • Income Tax

  • National Insurance

directly from your wages before you’re paid.

This means you don’t usually need to calculate or pay tax yourself if you’re employed.

Who Is PAYE For?

PAYE usually applies if you are:

  • Employed

  • Paid a salary or wages

  • Paid through an employer’s payroll

It can also apply to:

  • Company directors

  • Pension income

If PAYE applies to you, your employer handles tax deductions.

How Does PAYE Work?

Each time you’re paid:

  1. Your employer calculates your pay

  2. Tax and National Insurance are deducted

  3. You receive your net (take-home) pay

  4. Your employer sends the tax to HMRC

The amount deducted depends on your:

  • Salary

  • Tax code

  • Personal allowance

What Is a Tax Code Under PAYE?

Your tax code tells your employer how much tax to deduct.

It reflects:

  • Your tax-free allowance

  • Other income

  • Benefits or adjustments

If your tax code is wrong, you could pay too much or too little tax.

Do You Need to File a Tax Return If You’re on PAYE?

Most employees do not need to file a tax return if PAYE is their only income.

However, you may still need to complete Self Assessment if you:

  • Have additional income

  • Are self-employed as well

  • Earn above certain thresholds

  • Receive untaxed income

You can learn more on our Self Assessment services page.

What If PAYE Is Wrong?

PAYE issues can happen if:

  • Your tax code is incorrect

  • You start a new job

  • You have multiple jobs

  • HMRC records are out of date

This can usually be corrected by updating your details with HMRC.

PAYE vs Self Assessment

  • PAYE – Tax deducted automatically by your employer

  • Self Assessment – You report income and pay tax yourself

Some people may be affected by both systems.
