What Is a UTR Number?
A UTR number (Unique Taxpayer Reference) is a 10-digit number issued by HMRC to identify you or your business for tax purposes.
If you’re self-employed, a sole trader, a company director, or need to complete a Self Assessment tax return, you’ll almost certainly need a UTR number.
Many people only realise they need one when they try to file a tax return or register as self-employed — which can cause delays if left too late.
What Is a UTR Number Used For?
Your UTR number is used by HMRC to track your tax records. You’ll need it when you:
File a Self Assessment tax return
Register as self-employed
Communicate with HMRC about your tax
Pay income tax or corporation tax
Appoint an accountant to act on your behalf
Without a UTR, you won’t be able to submit a tax return.
Who Needs a UTR Number?
You’ll usually need a UTR number if you are:
Self-employed or a sole trader
A company director
A landlord receiving rental income
Someone with untaxed income
Required to complete a Self Assessment tax return
Limited companies receive a separate UTR for corporation tax once incorporated.
How Do I Get a UTR Number?
You get a UTR number by registering with HMRC.
If you’re self-employed:
You must register for Self Assessment. HMRC will then issue your UTR by post.
If you’ve set up a limited company:
HMRC automatically sends a UTR to your registered office address after incorporation.
This process can take up to 10 working days, so it’s important not to leave it too late.

Where Can I Find My UTR Number?
If you already have a UTR, you can usually find it on:
Previous tax returns
Letters from HMRC
Your HMRC online account
Your accountant’s records
If you’ve lost it, HMRC can resend it — but this can take time.
What Happens If I Don’t Have a UTR?
Without a UTR number:
You can’t file a Self Assessment tax return
You risk missing deadlines
You may receive penalties
You could delay paying tax correctly
This is why registering early is so important.
Common UTR Mistakes to Avoid
Registering too late
Losing HMRC letters
Confusing a personal UTR with a company UTR
Waiting until January to sort it out
Assuming PAYE employees never need one
If HMRC asks you to file a return, you must have a UTR.
